Played in Spa for the Francofolies festival today with Rachida Brakni, and had a chance to catch my friend Cali’s set with the amazing Steve Nieve on the piano. He is best known for his work with Elvis Costello for the past 30+ years, but in this acoustic setting he really gets a chance to experiment and showcase some of the many styles he masters.

I was in studio RDPC today recording for Cléa Vincent, produced by Severin and Stéphane “Alf” Briat. A fun day, and I had the opportunity to break out my old Yamaha CP-70 for the second time this week! The first time was Tuesday in Studio Gang with singer Florent Mothe, produced by Pierre Jaconelli. The CP was Yamaha’s version of a portable piano from the late 70’s, from the last days of electro-acoustic keyboard instruments – before affordable, polyphonic synthesizers changed everything in the early 80’s. The CP is a beautiful and great sounding instrument, with a very recognizable sound. The list of users is endless: John Lennon, U2, Tom Waits, George Duke, Elton John, Prince, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock…

I spent last week in Dakar, Senegal, doing preproduction for an album with Faada Freddy. He’s been active in groundbreaking Senegalese hiphop group Daara J for many years, but this time around he’s preparing a solo album in English. He’s an amazing singer, the project is very promising. My friends at Think Zik! are producing.
